What the UV index means
The UV index is an international measure of the strength of solar ultraviolet radiation reaching the surface. The scale runs from 0 and upwards. In Norway, summer values are typically between 3 and 7, with higher values possible in clear conditions, in the mountains and on snow. Sun protection is generally recommended from UV index 3 and above.
Tourists in Norway
UV exposure in Norway is easy to underestimate. The midnight sun, cool sea breezes, snow reflection in the mountains and bright beaches all mean that even on days that feel cool, the UV index can be significant. Check the UV index before long days outdoors — especially in the mountains, on the water or on snow.
